CLIFFS of FUNDY UNESCO GLOBAL GEOPARK
 

The Cliffs of Fundy UNESCO Global Geopark is located along the north shore of the Minas Basin of the Bay of Fundy,
stretching from Lower Truro in the east to Apple River in the west, with over 30 easily accessible geosites 
along this awesome coastline and escarpment. Cliffs of Fundy is located in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral home
of the Mi’kmaw people and their oral traditions of cultural geoheritage.
The Bay of Fundy is home to the highest tides in the world.

Geological Significance:
Evidence of the Earth’s incredible natural history includes the best example of how the supercontinent Pangea
was formed 300 million years ago and broke apart 100 million years later.
The massive Cobequid Fault provides a formidable backdrop of our environment.

HIKING

Cape Chignecto Park
Fifty km of trails along the cliffs and beaches of the Fundy coast. The park is designed for day hiking or backpacking with wilderness campsites provided making this a wonderful 3 or 4 day hike. Trail heads located at Red Rocks near Advocate (40 km west of Parrsboro) and Eatonville (70 km west of Parrsboro).

Partridge Island
Three km from Parrsboro town centre is Partridge Island, site of the original settlement of Parrsboro. A 1.5 km trail crosses the island to a look off offering magnificent views of Cape Blomidon, Cape Split and Spencer's Island.

Kenomee Hiking Trails
Thirty five km east of Parrsboro turn left onto the River Phillip Road in Economy to access a network of hiking trails characterized by sculptured cliffs, volcanic rock pinnacles and water falls. Thomas Cove Coastal Reserve
Thirty five km east of Parrsboro at the mouth of the Economy River. Spectacular views from 8 km of coastal and woodland trails.

Five Islands Provincial Park
20 km west of Parrsboro, several well maintained trails of 3 to 5 km length explore the Fundy cliffs and shore. At low tide walk on the ocean floor to the nearest islands.  https://parks.novascotia.ca/park/five-islands

The Joggins Fossil Centre
The centre features the world's largest collection of 300 million year old "Joggins Fossils" as well as exhibits of trilobites, brachiopods, bivalves, gastropods and fish fossils from around the

FORCE Visitor Centre, Parrsboro (West Bay).
The FORCE visitor centre overlooks the technology test site in the Minas Passage, Bay of Fundy where several companies are testing submerged in current turbines.  This location has the strongest tidal currents in the world and the potential for 300 MW of electricity generation.  The approximately 3,000-square foot facility houses interpretive exhibits, interactive displays, a small theatre/community room, as well as space for onsite meetings and research work.  http://fundyforce.ca/

Age of Sail Heritage Centre, Port Greville.

Located on Route 242 at Joggins is a centre for discovering rocks and fossils found on the beaches in this area.

Springhill Miner's Museum, Springhill.
Tour the depths ofthe Springhill coal mine, famous in song and legend, with a knowledgeable guide. Hear stories of the disaster of 1891, the 1916 subterranean fire which raged through the galleries, the loss of 39 men in the 1956 explosion
and the major “bump” in 1958 which killed 75 men.
